Course Overview

The assistant accountant apprenticeship develops the technical skills, knowledge and behaviours needed to support organisational finance functions. The programme focuses on building a solid understanding of accounting principles, financial processes and professional standards. Learners gain experience in preparing financial information, maintaining accurate records and contributing effectively to budgeting, reporting and audit activities. throughout the apprenticeship, emphasis is placed on accuracy, ethical conduct and the ability to work confidently with colleagues, clients and stakeholders.

Apprentices also develop strong analytical, communication and problem-solving skills, enabling them to handle complex financial data and support wider business decision-making. The programme combines workplace learning with theoretical study, helping learners understand how their role contributes to organisational performance and effective financial control.

  • Preparing financial statements and management reports
  • Double-entry book-keeping and accounting principles
  • Budgeting, costings, and variance analysis
  • Tax processes, legislation, and compliance

Assessment Methods

Assessment is carried out through a combination of on-programme learning and end-point assessment. During the apprenticeship, learners build a portfolio of evidence demonstrating their competence in practical accounting tasks, use of financial systems and application of knowledge. This may include workplace tasks, reflective accounts, employer feedback and completed assignments.

At the end of the programme, apprentices will sit a final end point assessment.

Progression Options

On completion of the assistant accountant apprenticeship, learners can progress into roles such as assistant accountant, finance officer, accounts technician or payroll supervisor.

Many apprentices continue their professional development through the professional accounting technician Level 4 apprenticeship or further qualifications with bodies such as AAT, ACCA or CIMA.

Entry Requirements

It is desirable for applicants to hold GCSEs in maths and English at grades 9 to 3, or an appropriate Level 2 qualification.

Learners should show strong numeracy skills, attention to detail and a willingness to develop professionally within a finance setting.
