On this one-year course, you will cover advanced theory and practical skills related to the barbering industry, including consultation, advanced cutting, design and facial hair shapes, traditional shaving services and face massage, creative hair design skills, chemical work (including perming), and designing and creating 2D and 3D patterns in the hair.

You will train and study in a commercial barbershop environment and may have opportunities to mentor junior barbers.

Work experience will be an essential part of the course, and you’ll attend national trade shows and exhibitions.

You will be encouraged to take part in local and national competitions and you will have the opportunity to show off your skills during the annual End of Year Showcase.

Topics may include:

  • Advanced techniques for cutting and styling hair and facial hair
  • Traditional shaving techniques
  • Face massage
  • Chemical work.

Assesment Methods

Your skills development will be assessed throughout the course with practical assessments and a series of online tests.

Progression Options

You could progress into employment or self employment within the industry, including sales, teaching, and training or becoming a brand ambassador, session stylist, or work in TV and film.

Alternatively, some students progress to University to follow forensic science, for example.

Entry Requirements

You will need four GCSEs in the 9-3 range, including English and maths, or a relevant Level 2 qualification.

We recommend purchasing an advanced barbers kit (approx. £60) and a professional uniform update (approx. £50).
