Course Overview

This apprenticeship develops skilled, confident and client-focused beauty therapists who can deliver a range of professional treatments in salon, spa or leisure environments. Learners build strong foundational skills while gaining an understanding of consultation, professionalism, hygiene and safe working practices.

Training combines hands-on workplace experience with structured off-the-job learning, enabling apprentices to practise massage techniques, skin care treatments, waxing, lash and brow services and nail treatments. They learn the underpinning anatomy and physiology that supports treatment delivery, alongside product knowledge and effective client communication.

By the end of the programme, apprentices can carry out beauty treatments to industry standard, maintain safe and hygienic working conditions, manage client expectations and contribute positively to the daily operation of a beauty business.

Topics may include:

  • Client consultation, communication, and treatment planning
  • Facial skincare treatments and basic facial massage techniques
  • Waxing services, lash and brow treatments and tinting
  • Manicure, pedicure, and nail finishing techniques
  • Anatomy, physiology, product knowledge, and safe working practices
  • Professionalism, hygiene, salon operations, and customer service.

Assessment Methods

The programme uses a blend of formative and summative assessment, including assessor observations, treatment portfolios, written tasks, client feedback, treatment diaries and tripartite progress reviews.

Practical mock assessments and practice knowledge tests help prepare learners for end-point assessment, ensuring they can carry out treatments safely, professionally and in accordance with industry standards.

Progression Options

On completion, learners can progress into roles such as beauty therapist, spa therapist or salon assistant. Further training options include the advanced beauty therapist level 3 apprenticeship, specialist pathways in massage, aesthetics, nail technology or spa therapy, and customer service or team leader programmes for those aiming toward supervisory roles.

Long-term progression may lead to senior therapist, salon supervisor, spa team leader, aesthetic practitioner or freelance and mobile beauty work.

Entry Requirements

GCSE English and maths at grade 4 or above is desired and you must also have secured suitable employment in a professional kitchen before starting the apprenticeship, as on-the-job training is essential to the programme.
