Course Overview

Chemistry is the central science that allows us to understand the world at a molecular level. Chemistry is also the key to solving some of the world’s most pressing problems – developing new medicines, recyclable plastics, more efficient solar cells or new types of battery.

The Chemistry A Level course covers core concepts such as atomic and electronic structure, bonding, molecular shapes, energetics, rates, and equilibria. You will explore the chemistry of particular groups of elements and organic molecules, learn about modern analytical techniques and investigate how a reaction can be modified by changing conditions.

Advanced level study brings together knowledge and understanding of these concepts through theoretical, practical, research and problem-solving tasks. Practical work is a key feature of the course, with one full lesson most weeks dedicated to developing laboratory skills and learning to analyse experimental results. Throughout the course, you will learn to express your ideas clearly and logically, and apply mathematical skills.

The course also features visits to local university laboratories and the opportunity to participate in chemistry competitions.

Assessment Methods

A Level Chemistry is assessed via three written exams at the end of year 2. To prepare you for this, you will take regular topic tests throughout the course and will be guided in your revision.

You will also be assessed, during practical lessons throughout the course, for the Practical Endorsement, which shows achievement of key scientific and laboratory skills.

Progression Options

The Chemistry A Level opens up many doors. It is essential for students who wish to study Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science, Chemistry or Pharmacy, but is also useful for those who intend to study Biological and Environmental Sciences, Physics, Engineering or other Health Professions.

A Chemistry A Level can also lead to technician-level roles and to apprenticeships and degree apprenticeships.

Previous students have progressed to universities including Bath, Bristol, Cambridge, Cardiff, London, Oxford, Southampton, and Surrey.

Entry Requirements

You need five GCSEs in the 9 to 4 range, including English Language at grade 4, Maths at grade 6, and Chemistry at grade 5 or Double Science grade 6-6.

Entry is subject to a successful interview.
