Course Overview

Those who wish to be employed in the food industry as a trainee or commis chef. There are many job roles that start with a commis chef qualification, such as cooks and chefs in small and large volume establishments.

Topics may include:

  • Prepare, cook and serve food
  • Food safety
  • Health and safety
  • How to run a food section and ensure service standards are met

Based in a real working environment, you learn and hone your skills as a Chef with one-to-one support from a specialist trainer and workplace mentor, all while earning a wage. Specialist workshops will be run in College to expand your culinary range across all food groups.

Please note: Commis Chef workshops take place at Taunton College.

Assessment Methods

Assessment takes place throughout the course, including online courses, learning journals to record practical skills, project work, and review visits with assessors.

Progression Options

The Commis Chef Apprenticeship can lead to a Senior Chef Production Cooking Apprenticeship. Alternatively, the training and skills learnt can lead to you becoming a Head Chef, Catering Manager or a trainer in hospitality.

Entry Requirements

You will need English Functional Skills Level 1 or GCSE grade 1 or above, and Mathematics Functional Skills Level 1 or GCSE grade 1 or above.
