This course is an exciting introduction to countryside studies where you will experience a wide range of environmental topics. The course offers you a great opportunity to develop core, practical conservation, and countryside management skills and you will gain an understanding of the principles of countryside and environmental management.

This course is delivered through classroom-based lessons, practical sessions, and tutorials.

Topics may include:

  • Working in land-based and wildlife industries
  • Plant and soil science
  • Work experience
  • Habitat maintenance
  • Ecology
  • Game management
  • Countryside estate maintenance.

Assessment Methods

You will study a combination of practical and theory subjects, with half of your time spent at our partnership farm. Your progress is assessed through a range of practical assessments, written assignments, presentations and projects, which are set and marked internally by college staff and then validated by an external moderator.

Progression Options

On successful completion, you can move to a Level 3 qualification to deepen your skills and knowledge. You could go directly into work-based learning with a countryside apprenticeship.

Entry-level job opportunities also exist in roles such as countryside ranger assistant, estate worker, conservation volunteer, grounds maintenance operative, and reserve assistant.

Entry Requirements

You need five GCSEs in the 9 to 3 range including maths, or a relevant Level 1 qualification with a Merit profile.

Entry is subject to a successful interview.
