You will develop both practical and theoretical knowledge in digital environments, systems design, and programming.

The course includes a substantial industry placement, giving you the opportunity to apply what you’ve learned in a professional digital setting.

Topics may include:

  • Data and digital analysis
  • Software and application design
  • Programming and development tools
  • Security, testing, and risk management
  • Legal and ethical considerations in IT
  • Computing systems and cloud environments.

Assesment Methods

You will study a combination of practical and theory-based content. Assessment is carried out through external examinations, coursework, and employer-set projects. You will also complete an industry placement of 315 hours (approximately 45 days). All work is assessed and validated externally.

Progression Options

On successful completion of this course, you will be well-prepared to progress into higher education, apprenticeships, or employment within the digital sector. Many students continue their studies at university, enrolling in degree programmes in computing, software engineering, cyber security, or digital technology at institutions such as Cardiff University, the University of Bath, and the University of Plymouth.

University Centre Somerset can provide local progression opportunities into foundation and honours degrees. Alternatively, students may pursue higher or degree-level apprenticeships, combining workplace experience with further study.

The course also leads directly into employment in roles such as software developer, systems analyst, IT support technician, digital project assistant, or data technician, with many graduates securing positions with leading technology employers or local digital businesses.
