Course Overview

This two-year course provides a valuable insight into engineering for students intending to pursue a wide range of careers within the technology and engineering disciplines. This qualification is a long-standing route into employment within either the electrical or mechanical industries as a technician and it also qualifies you for progression to higher education – either HNC, HND or university.

Topics may include:

  • Design, creation and testing of engineering products
  • The theory behind a variety of engineering disciplines
  • The role of the engineer in design, manufacture, and function
  • Science and maths
  • Welding and fabrication
  • Machining.

Assessment Methods

You will study a combination of practical and theory subjects, with time spent in our engineering workshop. Your progress is assessed both through assignments, these are set and marked internally by College staff and then validated by an external moderator and external exams, of which there are three.

You will also be expected to complete one week’s work experience in a relevant industry placement.

Progression Options

This qualification is equivalent to three A Levels and successful completion will enable progression on to Higher Education, apprenticeships (including Higher Apprenticeships) and a wide range of possible careers in industry.

Entry Requirements

You need five GCSEs in the 9 to 4 range, including English at grade 4 and Maths at grade 4 (although a grade 5 or above is desirable), or an appropriate Level 2 qualification with an overall Merit that includes maths.

Overalls and steel-toe capped boots are essential.
