Course Overview

ESOL Functional Skills English classes are designed for adults from overseas who are now settled in the UK and want to learn or improve their English. You’ll study in a friendly, supportive environment where you can build vocabulary, develop grammar skills, and practise English through practical, everyday citizenship topics. Courses are available at a range of levels. Before joining, you’ll need to attend an initial assessment at the college, which takes up to 75 minutes. Your assessor will recommend the most suitable course and exam for you. To book an assessment, call 01458 844614 during term-time and leave a message, or 01458 844590 during college holidays. You can also email ptadmissions@strode-college.ac.uk Late starts may be possible if spaces are available; however, you must be able to attend until June to complete all parts of the Functional Skills English exam. For this reason, the course is not suitable for those staying in the UK for only a short period.

Assessment Methods

As part of this course, you will take Functional Skills English exams in Reading, Writing and Speaking – you need to pass all three parts to achieve a qualification. There are five levels of exam from Entry 1 to Level 2.

Entry Requirements

You will be required to come into the college for an Initial Assessment with a tutor before joining the course.
