Course Overview

Please note: you will make your selection of three A Levels once you have progressed into the application process.

This is an ideal course if you enjoy maths and want to study in greater depth than Maths A Level. It is excellent preparation for progression to a degree in Maths or in a subject with a significant mathematical content, such as Physics or Engineering.

To gain A Level Further Maths, you need to study more challenging areas of maths in addition to those you study for the Maths A Level.

Topcs may include:

  • Complex numbers
  • Matrices and differential equations
  • High level applications of mathematics.

Assessment Methods

This course is a linear course, assessed by three two-hour written exams at the end of two years of study.

Students will also have weekly homework and internal weekly tests.

Progression Options

Any student wishing to study Further Maths must study A Level Maths. At Strode, we teach our students on what we call our ‘Fast Track’ programme. This essentially involves students having double Maths on their timetable, completing A Level Maths in one year, before going on to do the same thing for Further Maths in the second year.

This is ideal for anyone who wants to have fewer exams to complete in year 2, and provides an actual grade for university applications, rather than a predicted one. It also helps enable students to perform in entrance exams such as the MAT, which is a requirement for going to the University of Oxford.

Much of the pure maths studied on this course is studied as part of the first year of an undergraduate degree course for mathematicians and many past students have commented on how helpful this has been to them at university.

Entry Requirements

Five GCSEs at grade 9-4, including English Language.

You should have gained a grade 9-8 at GCSE Maths and be studying (or completed) A Level Maths.

You will need an advanced calculator.
