Course Overview
Please note: you will make your selection of three A Levels once you have progressed into the application process.
You will develop a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts and explore their application to a range of real-life problems.
The course covers basic mathematical techniques such as problem solving, mathematical modelling and proof. Much of the course is pure mathematics, developing the techniques required to solve a problem once it has been expressed in mathematical terms, including algebra, trigonometry, geometry and calculus.
Topics may include:
- Mathematic modelling
- Algebra, trigonometry, geometry and calculus
- Mechanics
- Equations
- Behaviours of objects acted upon by forces
- Statistics, including analysing experimental or survey data.
Assessment Methods
This course is a linear course, assessed by three two-hour written exams at the end of two years of study.
Students will also have weekly homework and internal weekly tests.
Progression Options
Maths will greatly increase your range of career options and students go on to study a wide range of degrees at university, usually with some mathematical content.
Former students have progressed to degree courses including Maths, Physics, Engineering, Psychology, Biology, Medicine and Veterinary Science. Recently places have been obtained at the universities of Bristol, Cambridge, Exeter, Hertfordshire, Oxford, Plymouth and the Royal Veterinary College, London.

All students have the opportunity to meet with a Careers Advisor for 1:1 career support.
The Student Experience Team can mentor and signpost students who are struggling with a range of issues that are negatively impacting their day-to-day life. The Student Experience Team works closely with the Safeguarding & Lifestyle Teams to promote proactive wellbeing enrichment sessions. The team can refer on to counselling when appropriate.

All of our students will have a personal tutor to support them with their academic progress and personal development. The tutorial programme consists of 1:1 support, group tutorials and guest speakers, plus targeted online resources which complement the UCS College Group Advantage scheme.
