Course Overview

In this A Level you will learn to identify, communicate and debate some of the most enduring human questions, such as ‘Does God exist?’ ‘Where does morality come from?’ ‘Do we have free will?’ ‘Do the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few?’

You will study a range of historic and contemporary philosophers and religious teachers, using their ideas to better understand the reasoning behind modern beliefs and values. The course is taught in three parts covering themes in the philosophy of religion, ethics, and a study of religious belief (Buddhism).

This A Level complements a range of other subjects due to its broad themes, including connections to the sciences, psychology, history and law.

Topics may include:

  • Philosophical arguments for God
  • The problem of evil
  • Religious experiences and miracles
  • Virtue ethics
  • Utilitarianism
  • Free will and determinism
  • Buddhism and science
  • The Mindfulness movement.

Assessment Methods

This course is assessed by written examinations. You will be assessed on your knowledge of key arguments and your ability to evaluate the success of different viewpoints.

Progression Options

This course provides a foundation in logical reasoning and demonstrates your ability to understand and assess diverse perspectives. The skills gained at A Level would further benefit both humanities and science degree pathways.

Additionally, you will practice written and spoken communication skills beneficial to employment in a range of sectors, such as law, politics and marketing.

Entry Requirements

You need five GCSEs grades 9 to 4, including English Language at grade 4 and Maths at grade 4.
