Course Overview

Please note: you will make your selection of three A Levels once you have progressed into the application process.

This is a popular choice for students aiming for careers in sport, physiotherapy and teaching; it has natural links with Psychology, Sociology and Biology. The course is broad in approach; you will study aspects of anatomy, physiology, psychology and the history of sport.

As the course involves participation in physical activity, alongside theoretical study, you should display an appreciation of the health and fitness benefits of an active lifestyle and evidence of current sporting involvement.

Topics may include:

  • Health and fitness
  • Nutrition and training methods
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Sporting performance, including energy systems, biomechanics, and injuries
  • Sports psychology
  • History of sport.

Assessment Methods

This course is assessed by written exams, a practical assessment where you will need to show competence in an agreed sporting activity, and a piece of written coursework.

Progression Options

You can progress to higher education studies at university in Sport Science, Sport Development, Sport Therapy and Physiotherapy, Sport Coaching or PE Teaching.

Former students have progressed to a variety of sports related degrees at the universities of Bath, Exeter, Gloucester, Loughborough, Plymouth, and Southampton.

Entry Requirements

Five GCSEs at grade 9-4, including English Language, Maths, Biology and grade 4 in Core and Additional Science.

You need to play one sport on a regular and competitive basis, or you will need to join one of the Team UCS College Group sports teams.
