A Levels

At Strode College, we offer a dynamic and engaging A Level programme designed to help you thrive, with exclusive enrichment opportunities, international trips, and expert support from devoted staff.

Your next step after GCSEs

A LevelsΒ provide you the opportunity to continue onto university courses as well as into higher level jobs. A Levels will suit you if you want to study a range of subjects before progressing onto specialist study or a particular profession.

They are suited to learners who enjoy self-study, carrying out research and who perform well in exams, although some also include coursework. All students will study three A Levels over two years. At Strode College, we teach 31 different A Level subjects (including Extended Certificates).

Why study A Levels?

We believe that learning goes far beyond the classroom. We ensure that, alongside our excellent teaching standards, our A Level students develop personally and socially, and make the most of incredible once-in-a-lifetime opportunities.

Academic mentoring

You’ll have frequent tutorial sessions, 1:1 time with your academic mentor, and frequent guest speakers, UCAS support, and progression events.

Extended Project

We encourage all students to explore a topic they’re passionate about in-depth in the form of an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ).

International recognition

The gold-standard of British education, A Levels are recognised worldwide. If your future is abroad, look no further.

Specialisation

At GCSE, you cover a broad range of 8–10 subjects. A Levels allow you to narrow that focus significantly, usually down to three.

A Levels and Extended Certificates

A mixed model offers students the option to study A Levels alongside Extended Certificates. The most common model is two A Levels and one Extended Certificate.

Extended Certificates are a more practical way to learn. The skills you learn on an Extended Certificate are generally assessed through a series of assignments rather than formal examinations (although some courses may still include some examined units).

Extended Certificates are equivalent to one A Level and are an accepted route into higher education or employment. Make sure to always confirm the university or higher education course you plan to study accepts Extended Certificates.

Course levels and our entry requirements

A Levels are Level 3 qualifications. To study A Levels at Strode you need:

  • Five GCSEs grade 9-4 or equivalent.
  • Grade 4 or higher in English Language or Maths.

Some subjects have additional entry requirements. Please visit the subject pages for more detail. Home educated students with no formal qualifications will be assessed.

If the entry requirements prevent you from studying a subject that is central to your progression plans after A Levels, we will help you explore alternative routes.

“I find the teachers very helpful and enthusiastic for their subject so I feel comfortable asking questions. The atmosphere is very calm and it has much more freedom in comparison to secondary school. There are also frequent breaks for grabbing a snack and speaking to friends or teachers, making the day feel less intensive.”
