Course Overview

This qualification is for people who have attained counselling qualifications and want to expand their knowledge and skills. It is particularly useful for those interested in private practice or in progressing to an even higher level of study. You attend college one day a week for one year and are required to undertake personal therapy during the course.

The Level 5 Diploma prepares qualified counselors for independent or senior practice, focusing on advanced ethical frameworks, client assessment, and specialised therapeutic techniques.

Topics may include:

  • Working safely as an independent practitioner
  • Handling complex mental health issues
  • Diversity
  • Trauma-informed care.

Please note: you may incur additional costs through personal therapy sessions.

Assessment Methods

This counselling qualification is assessed internally by tutors through a candidate portfolio of evidence and externally through a written case review.

Candidates must be rated Proficient in all seven learning outcomes, evidencing 60 hours of client work, 40 hours of personal therapy, and 3,000–3,500 word assignments.

Progression Options

This qualification is designed to give learners the knowledge, skills and competencies to work as self-employed counsellors in independent practice. It also equips learners to take on a senior counselling role in an organisational context where client assessment, referral and routine evaluation are part of the role.

Students will need to demonstrate prior attainment of counselling related qualifications and practice at Level 4. All applicants will have a guidance interview with the course leader.
