Course Overview
Step up to the wheel in this dedicated throwing class, open to anyone who has a bit of experience and wants to take their wheelwork to the next level.
Through a mix of group demonstrations and one-on-one tuition, you will master a wide range of throwing techniques to create a variety of elegant and complex shapes. We place a strong emphasis on the entire lifecycle of the pot – meaning your work will be finished, glazed, and carefully evaluated for both its visual appeal and everyday function.
Beyond the technical skills, the rhythmic motion of the wheel is deeply meditative, building confidence as you watch your creations take shape. As one of our most requested courses, early enrollment is strongly advised.
Topics may include:
- Advanced centering and pulling techniques
- Shaping bowls, cylinders, and complex forms
- Trimming and turning foot rings
- Creating functional, everyday ceramics
- Glazing for functional ware.
Assessment Methods
There are no formal assessments for this course. Our tutors are hands-on, providing constant, supportive guidance as you work at the wheel.
Progression Options
Students often re-enroll to continue perfecting their throwing techniques, or expand their repertoire by joining our other specialised Art & Design short courses.
Entry Requirements
There are no formal entry requirements for this course, though some basic prior expereince with clay or the pottery wheel is beneficial.

All of our students will have a personal tutor to support them with their academic progress and personal development. The tutorial programme consists of 1:1 support, group tutorials and guest speakers, plus targeted online resources which complement the UCS College Group Advantage scheme.
