Assessment Methods
The food and beverage team member apprenticeship standard is assessed through two key methods designed to confirm full occupational competence. First, an independent assessor carries out an observation with questions, watching the apprentice perform real workplace tasks such as serving customers, maintaining hygiene, handling payments and managing stock. After the observation, the assessor asks follow-up questions to check understanding and decision-making.
The second method is an interview underpinned by a portfolio of evidence, where the apprentice discusses real examples from their work that demonstrate their knowledge of areas such as legislation, complaints handling, sustainability and wider industry practices. Performance in both methods is combined to determine the final grade, ensuring assessment reflects both practical skills and underpinning knowledge.
Progression Options
The food and beverage team member apprenticeship offers strong progression opportunities within hospitality. Apprentices can move into roles such as hospitality supervisor or hospitality manager, taking on greater responsibility for leading teams, coordinating service and improving operational performance. They may also progress to further training, including the Level 3 hospitality supervisor apprenticeship or specialist courses in barista skills, beverage service or customer experience.
These routes help learners build wider expertise across cafés, restaurants, hotels and large venues. With experience, apprentices can advance into senior front-of-house roles, operations management or specialist areas such as events service or licensed hospitality management, supporting long-term career development.
